How important is your family medical history?
If you’ve been to a doctor before, you’ve probably been asked about your family medical history. How important is it actually? Family genetics aren’t everything, but if one of your family members has a certain disorder, you could be more likely to develop it too. However, most conditions are caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. It’s important to share as much as you can about your family’s health history with your doctor, as it can impact your health. You should share any diagnoses of health conditions, medications that worked for them, the age they developed the condition(s), and the cause of death of family members who’ve died. With this information, doctors can not only give a well-informed diagnosis but also provide better treatment. However, if you don’t know your family history, don’t worry! Doctors can still diagnose and treat health conditions without that information.
